In fiction this period was remarkable for the appearance of the new ideal of femininity, namely the ‘New Woman’ figure. The image of the ‘New Woman’ was represented as a strong, independent, intelligent personality that shocked the conventional readership with her non-conformal views on her status and place in society. The great English novelist Thomas Hardy has created several highly impressive character portrayals of the ‘New Woman’ figure in his fiction. Hardy’s unique sentiments and unconventional attitudes towards women’s issues precisely reflect the mood and debates of the time. All his life the novelist was preoccupied with investigating women’s nature. His female characters are individuals, exploring their womanhood and defending their right to have a free choice. They are not only beautiful and charming, but are vested with intelligence; they struggle for self-realisation and freedom from male authority over their lives
